That same decade, she debuted her perfume, Chanel No. In 1926, she introduced her first little black dress, reclaiming a color that had once been reserved for mourning and working-class women. It was there that she learned to sew as well as appreciate the classic pairing of black and white as worn by the nuns. Following the death of her mother, her father left her in an orphanage where she lived until the age of 18. She followed this success with a couture house, opened in 1915 in Biarritz.īut Chanel was not born into a life of glamour. Soon she added a sportswear store in the Normandy resort town of Deauville, where Coco set the tone for her defining sense of style - traditionally masculine garments reimagined for feminine shapes, made from simple jersey fabric.Įffortless and elegant, Chanel's designs promoted comfort and grace in women’s wear that had been dominated in the previous century by complicated layers of fabric and cumbersome corsets. The boutique drew the attention of the Parisian fashion elite who popularized her wide-brimmed Chanel Modes hats. The first Chanel shop was established in 1910 in Paris on rue Cambon by the young milliner Gabrielle Chanel (1883–1971), who had picked up the nickname “Coco” while working as a club singer. Today vintage Chanel handbags, jackets and evening dresses are among the most sought-after clothing and accessories for fashion lovers all over the world. Here’s what it was actually like to go backstage at Couture Fashion Week in the 1990s.In the years following the opening of her modest millinery shop, Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel became a pivotal designer of both fashionable casual wear and Paris haute couture as well as an icon and arbiter of 20th-century style with her bob haircut and pearls. It was chaotic - but this was the good kind of chaos, which we all miss in 2021. Mariah Carey caught her 1990s couture shows while cuddling her puppy and late supermodel Stella Tennant would arrive on the back of a motorbike. This was the decade when you could spot Sylvester Stallone (again, minus publicity entourage) loitering near the backstage entrance, and Richard Gere might be passing through to meet Cindy Crawford. Supermodels prepped their own makeup backstage, film star Rosanna Arquette took her seat, unaccompanied, for the Chanel couture catwalk presentation and waited patiently for the show to start. It was in the 1990s that the resplendence of couture came varnished with rebellion. Exactly a year earlier, another British star of the nouvelle avant garde, John Galliano, had unveiled his debut couture collection for Dior and the once-serene salons were now resolutely chock full of Hollywood celebrities, mingling with rock stars, pop stars and royalty. The upshot? McQueen had piqued the attention of the world’s press with his no-bullshit attitude as much as his knife-sharp corsetry. Just the day before, a 27-year-old British designer by the name of Alexander McQueen had presented his debut couture collection for Givenchy, entitled Search for the Golden Fleece. Norton proved that if an OPN is not divisible by 3, 5 or 7, it must have at least 27 prime factors. In 1888, for instance, James Sylvester proved that no OPN could be divisible by 105. These were neither the first nor the last restrictions established for the hypothetical OPNs. ![]() He showed not only that the number of OPNs with k distinct prime factors is finite, as had been established by Leonard Dickson in 1913, but that the size of the number must be smaller than 2 4 k. “That motivated me to study number theory in college and try to move things forward.” His first paper on OPNs, published in 2003, placed further restrictions on these hypothetical numbers. “Seeing that progress could be made on this problem gave me hope, in my naiveté, that maybe I could do something,” Nielsen said. He delved into the literature, coming across a 1974 paper by Carl Pomerance, a mathematician now at Dartmouth College, which proved that any OPN must have at least seven distinct prime factors. Nielsen first learned about perfect numbers during a high school math competition. It involves the closest thing to OPNs yet discovered. But last June he hit upon a new way of approaching the problem that might lead to more progress. And, also like his peers, he does not believe a proof is within immediate reach. Like many of his 21st-century peers, Nielsen thinks there probably aren’t any OPNs. Nielsen, now a professor at Brigham Young University (BYU), was ensnared by a related question: Do any odd perfect numbers (OPNs) exist? The Greek mathematician Nicomachus declared around 100 CE that all perfect numbers must be even, but no one has ever proved that claim. Euler proved 2,000 years later that this formula actually generates every even perfect number, though it is still unknown whether the set of even perfect numbers is finite or infinite. For example, if p is 2, the formula gives you 2 1 × (2 2 − 1) or 6, and if p is 3, you get 2 2 × (2 3 − 1) or 28 - the first two perfect numbers. He showed that if p and 2 p − 1 are prime numbers (whose only divisors are 1 and themselves), then 2 p −1 × (2 p − 1) is a perfect number. The updates got out of control and I stopped documenting them here. But Pythagoras was aware of perfect numbers back in 500 BCE, and two centuries later Euclid devised a formula for generating even perfect numbers. Make sure you get a regular A1C test, especially if you think you might be at risk for diabetes. Your average blood glucose level for the last 2-3 months is at the level of someone with type 2 diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has established the following cutoffs: A1C Chart A1C Level Generally, high A1C values indicate high average blood sugar levels and that a person might be at risk for or may have diabetes. What are “normal” A1C levels for people who don't have diabetes? It is only when the red blood cell is "recycled" (which happens every 2 to 3 months) that the sugar coating disappears. The test is representative of a 2 to 3-month average because once a red blood cell becomes coated with sugar, the link is irreversible. Similarly, higher A1Cs can lead to "macrovascular" complications, such as heart disease.Ī1C is usually measured in a lab with routine blood work, or with a countertop machine in a doctor’s office (and some pharmacies) using a fingerstick.Ī1C measures the relative percentage of “glycated hemoglobin,” which refers to red blood cells called hemoglobin with sugar attached to it. If a person consistently has higher blood glucose levels, A1C levels go up because more red blood cells are coated with sugar. Though A1C doesn’t provide day-to-day information, lower A1Cs are correlated with a lower risk of “microvascular” complications, such as kidney disease (nephropathy), vision loss (retinopathy), and nerve damage (neuropathy). It is one measure we have of how well blood glucose is controlled and an indicator of diabetes management. What is A1C and why is it used?Ī1C estimates a person’s average blood sugar levels over a 2 to 3-month span. In a follow-up piece, we will discuss time-in-range, blood sugar variability, and how to measure and interpret them. This article describes why A1C is used in the first place, as well as factors that can lead to misleadingly high or low values. However, as an average over a period of months, A1C cannot capture critical information such as time spent in a target range (70-180 mg/dl) and below range (less than 70 mg/dl). For every 1% decrease in A1C, there is significant protection against those complications. A1C reflects average blood sugars over 2 to 3 months, and through studies like DCCT and UKPDS, higher A1C levels have been shown to be associated with the risk of diabetes complications (kidney and nerve disease).
